Freelance translators - hints and tips

Don't think it's easy money:To work full-time as a translator, unless you have very specialist skills in an in-demand language pair, you need a long list of regular customers. It usually takes over a year until you have enough work to keep you going full time.

Stand out from the crowd: Offer additional services and/or demonstrate extraordinary flexibility. Our industry is expanding massively and translators who go the extra mile will always be in demand. Offer to work nights, weekends and handle rush jobs. Make sure you can be contacted on your mobile at all times.

Always continue to market yourself: .After you have applied to many agencies and start getting regular assignments, you might be tempted to assume that translation companies will automatically keep offering you work meaning there is no need to continue contacting new prospective clients and/or touching base with previous contacts. However, this is a bad assumption and a very dangerous strategy!

Remember, demand comes and goes and translation companies go out of business (not London Translations though!). Also project managers who you like you and get on well with you may leave and the new person could favour one of their previous contacts.

Don't forget the hidden expenses: Being a translator is certainly well-paid compared with other jobs which let you work from home on interesting, projects but remember that up to 45 percent of your fees as a freelance translator will need to be put aside to cover things which your employer would not normally cover if you had a full time (in house) job.

DO NOT accept work you can't handle under any circumstances: The fastest way to blow your career as a freelance translator is accept an assignment which you can't deliver on time to the required quality. Word gets around fast in this industry and you could well be sued for damages. If you are not confident it is OK to say "NO". Much better to do this than mess up a job.

Be professional:. As I mentioned before, finish every project on time and on budget, and NEVER miss a deadline without notifying us as soon as you realize that, despite your good planning, the project won't be done on time. As we always say "Bad new is only bad news when it's late news". If you are in trouble pick up the phone and call us immediately. Don't use excuses, we've heard them all before.
